Barira Rashid is a PhD student in Geosciences (GIS and Remote Sensing) at the University of Arkansas whose fascination with geospatial technologies began when she first encountered a satellite image of a river delta during her undergraduate studies in environmental science—a moment that revealed how maps could tell stories invisible from the ground. Now specializing in object-based image analysis and deep learning, she uses remote sensing and GeoAI to map Animal Feeding Operations and their environmental impacts, demonstrating how every pixel can reveal insights about our planet’s health and guide sustainable management decisions. Barira is committed to using geospatial technology to uncover hidden environmental patterns while amplifying voices and communities that are often overlooked. Her vision is to apply these tools to protect ecosystems, promote sustainability, and empower communities with actionable information that creates equitable outcomes. Barira is dedicated to building a more inclusive geospatial community by mentoring students from underrepresented backgrounds, collaborating across disciplines, and ensuring that geospatial technology serves people of all backgrounds as both learners and leaders.
