Dr. Thomas Butkiewicz is director of The Data Visualization Research Lab within The Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping. The lab’s research focuses on applying the principles of human visual perception and interactive technologies, such as virtual and augmented reality, to serve the needs of hydrographers, ocean scientists, and mariners. Projects include 3D VR data editing tools, web-based visual analysis of multi-year acoustic recordings, augmented reality for safer marine navigation, and immersive underwater telepresence.
