Piloting New AEC Technology from Rollout & ROI

Feb 12 2024

2:00 PM - 3:30 PM MT

Room 502

There is no shortage of new technologies that are aimed at improving AEC workflows – but many firms have struggled with deciding when and how to trial and roll out those new technologies. In some cases, their reluctance has slowed overall technological adoption, because the risk of the unknown seems too high. In this session, presenters will provide tools and strategies for both identifying which new technologies are worth trialing, and how to go about creating a successful pilot program to maximize ROI.

AR/VR/XR for Owners
Augmented/Virtual/Extended reality or XR are an immersive technology that has gained significant popularity among tech enthusiasts and designers. With the rapid advancement in computing power and display technologies, the technology has become more accessible and realistic, offering owners a unique and captivating experience.

One of the key applications of XR for owners is in the design and planning phase. Traditionally, architects and engineers relied on 2D blueprints and computer-aided design (CAD) models to envision their projects. However, these methods often fail to provide a comprehensive understanding of scale, spatial relationships, and the overall feel of the built environment. XR changes this paradigm by allowing stakeholders to step into a virtual representation of the project.

With XR, architects and designers can use the BIM or Point Cloud file of the buildings and infrastructure. These models can be explored and interacted with using XR headsets and controllers, providing an immersive experience that helps identify design flaws, optimize layouts, and make informed decisions. Construction professionals can walk through virtual spaces, inspect structural elements, evaluate material choices, and assess the impact of lighting and spatial arrangements. This level of detail and realism enables better communication and collaboration among project teams, clients, and stakeholders, reducing the chances of costly revisions and rework well before construction begins.
