NeRFs for Geospatial and Beyond

Feb 12 2024

10:00 AM - 11:00 AM MT

Exhibit Hall Theater

Last year, Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs) burst on the scene as an intriguing new approach to create new views of complex 3D scenes based only on a set of 2D images. This technique – which can be utilized to create fly-throughs of scenes that were only captured in 2D or short videos – has found an unexpected audience and use cases that move it out of the novelty space into a useful tool for providing contexts for as-built conditions, illustrating complex visual scenes for stakeholders, and more. Hear from professionals utilizing NeRFs in their work, and how the technique may be helpful to yours.

NeRFs and Gaussian Splats in Construction: From Proof of Concept to Client Requirement
In this session, Ben will share his experience with using NeRFs and gaussian splats to create realistic 3D models of construction sites. He will cover the following topics: –

  • His journey with NeRFs: how he discovered them, what challenges he faced, and how he overcame them
  • The advantages and disadvantages of NeRFs/splats compared to photogrammetry, the traditional method of 3D reconstruction from images
  • The benefits of using cloud-based services that can handle the training and rendering of NeRFs for you, saving time and resources
  • Some examples of how NeRFs/splats can be applied to various scenarios in construction, such as site inspection and progress monitoring
