Matt Bethel has been in the remote sensing business since 1997. He is the current ASPRS Lidar Division Director and actively contributes to promoting improvements in the lidar industry on behalf of ASPRS. His credentials include Certified Photogrammetrist (CP) and GIS Professional (GISP). He coauthored the Lidar Best Practices Addendum to the ASPRS Positional Accuracy Standards for Digital Geospatial Data Edition 2, Version 2 (2024).
Matt is Director of Operations and Technology for Merrick & Company. He has been with Merrick since 2001 where his expertise includes multi-sensor systems engineering covering design, integration, testing, maintenance, and operations. These systems include nadir, oblique, and gimballed airborne Lidar and camera payload combinations for linear mode and flash Lidar as well as uncrewed aircraft systems. Matt has extensive experience with additional remote sensing modalities ranging from RGB digital cameras to full motion video. This also includes multispectral, hyperspectral, and thermal cameras.
Matt manages the operations of Merrick Geomatics’ production team from flight planning, acquisition, data processing, to delivery. This experience covers data processing aspects such as Merrick’s workflow design, High Performance Computing (both on Prem, Cloud, and hybrid), and the research and development of new geospatial solutions.
Lastly, in addition to these roles, Matt is also the Software Development Manager for Merrick’s MARS Lidar processing software, which is used for Merrick’s Lidar production and is sold commercially.
