Proven in Practice: Capture Workflows That Reduce Risk and Deliver Outcomes

Feb 25 2027

1:30 PM - 2:30 PM MT

Grand Ballroom A

Two practitioners on what disciplined reality capture actually returns to a project. The first draws on more than 15 years of terrestrial lidar work across industrial facilities, municipal infrastructure, mining operations, and heritage buildings, with practical guidance on planning, field acquisition, point cloud registration, quality assurance, and large dataset management, and on how that data supports infrastructure renewal, asset management, and digital twin initiatives. The second follows a construction case study using reality capture, digital documentation, visualization software, and VDC workflows to support project planning, verify existing conditions, improve coordination and jobsite safety, and provide greater visibility into project progress.

1:30 PM – 2:00 PM

Beyond Point Clouds: Unlocking the Value of Terrestrial Lidar for Infrastructure and Digital Twins

Presented by Peyman Bashiri, Aero Geometrics Ltd

Terrestrial lidar has transformed the way geospatial professionals capture, document, and manage complex built environments. This presentation explores how high-accuracy laser scanning is being used to create reliable geospatial datasets that support engineering, infrastructure rehabilitation, asset management, and digital twin initiatives.

Drawing on more than 15 years of experience delivering reality capture projects across Canada and US, the session will present practical workflows for project planning, field data acquisition, point cloud registration, quality assurance, and the creation of accurate 3D deliverables. Through real-world case studies from industrial facilities, municipal infrastructure, mining operations, and heritage buildings, attendees will see how terrestrial lidar reduces project risk, minimizes site revisits, and provides comprehensive spatial information for informed decision-making.

The presentation will also discuss current challenges, lessons learned, and best practices for managing large point cloud datasets and integrating reality capture into engineering and asset management workflows.

2:00 PM – 2:30 PM

Case Study: Leveraging Construction Technology to Improve Workforce Efficiency, Safety, and Project Outcomes

Presented by Nathan Somerville, VectorNet

This session will explore how construction teams are leveraging reality capture, digital documentation, visualization software, and VDC workflows to improve project efficiency, reduce risk, enhance jobsite safety, and make more informed decisions throughout the project lifecycle.

Through a real-world case study, attendees will see how these technologies were used to support project planning, verify existing conditions, improve coordination, and provide greater visibility into project progress. The session will also examine how digital construction workflows are being adopted across the industry and how organizations of all sizes can incorporate these tools to improve project outcomes and workforce efficiency.
