Reality Capture Specialists

Transforming the Built World with Accurate 3D Data

From as-builts and construction validation to infrastructure monitoring and heritage preservation, Geo Week is where reality capture specialists discover the tools, technology, and expertise to capture the world in 3D — and deliver insights that matter.

Why Geo Week for Reality Capture Professionals?

Reality capture specialists are being asked to document and digitize the physical world with greater accuracy and speed, across a wide range of industries. Whether supporting construction projects, monitoring critical infrastructure, or creating detailed records of cultural landmarks, they face the same challenges: managing massive datasets, integrating with BIM, CAD, or GIS systems, and communicating the value of 3D data to stakeholders. At Geo Week, you’ll connect with experts, technology providers, and peers who are redefining how reality capture delivers value from project kickoff through long-term operations and maintenance.

Sessions and Topics Elevating Reality Capture Workflows

Below is a collection of sessions for reality capture specialists – be sure to view the complete conference program schedule to see all the sessions available to you!

From historic preservation to mission-critical infrastructure, 3D mapping technologies are expanding what’s possible in even the most challenging environments. This session showcases two extraordinary projects that demonstrate how lidar, UAVs, and 3D modeling can deliver high-value insights while navigating complex logistical, technical, and regulatory conditions.

In one presentation, volunteers from the Arizona Professional Land Surveyors and the Arizona Young Surveyors Network share how they digitally documented the iconic Tombstone Courthouse, overcoming tight interiors, fragile materials, and limited access to create detailed 3D models for preservation and education. In another, HDR engineers detail the first-ever commercial drone operations at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, illustrating how lidar and aerial imagery informed critical infrastructure planning while maintaining the highest levels of security and compliance.

Attendees will gain a firsthand look at the workflows, collaboration, and innovation required to capture accurate data in unique, high-stakes settings where precision and planning make all the difference.

Mapping and surveying underground utilities in one of the world’s largest cities is as challenging as one might imagine. Along with the surface traffic and crowds, there are hundreds of years’ worth of pipes, cables, tunnels, and foundations beneath the streets of New York City, often with uncertain or unknown locations. Gas utilities in New York City have traditionally been surveyed using total stations for transmission lines or sketched by measuring from intersections and curbs, and pulling swing ties from buildings for distribution lines. These methods have served well for a long time, but have clear limitations, including accuracy, lack of geolocation, and incomplete data. Now, as utility owners and consultants adopt 3D tools for CAD, GIS, and digital twins for faster data-driven decisions, and as industry standards like ASCE 75-22 gain momentum, new tools and workflows for mapping and as-built surveys are needed to meet these demands.

This session will bring together utility owners, consultants, and industry experts to discuss current practices in New York City and ongoing efforts to modernize data collection, visualization, and management. Panelists will address the complexities of working in densely populated urban areas, the technological and institutional transformations necessary for implementing modern mapping programs, and the substantial cost, operational, and liability benefits associated with these advancements.

This session will highlight the latest breakthroughs in how we capture, process, and visualize the built world—from field data collection to high-fidelity digital twins.

Session 1 – 4:30 PM – 5:00 PM

Leveraging Reality Capture Workflows Across Diverse Transportation Projects

Learn how modern workflows combining terrestrial, UAV, mobile, and wearable lidar with SLAM mapping are improving efficiency and accuracy in transportation design and assessment. Through three Florida-based projects—from highway design in Edgewater to post-hurricane roadway surveys and bypass documentation in Immokalee—this session illustrates how reality capture supports both rapid emergency response and long-term infrastructure planning.

Speaker: Scott Graham

Session 2 – 5:00 PM – 5:30 PM

Elevating Digital Twins: High-Fidelity Reality Capture with Gaussian Splatting and Enhanced Photogrammetry

Discover how Gaussian Splatting and advanced photogrammetry are redefining 3D visualization and digital twin creation. This session demonstrates how these innovations enhance point-cloud density, preserve geodetic accuracy, and enable seamless sharing through cloud-based platforms—paving the way for more realistic, interactive, and collaborative digital twins across industries.

Speaker: Pierangelo Rothenbüehler

Together, these sessions showcase how innovation in capture and visualization is advancing precision, collaboration, and decision-making across today’s infrastructure landscape.

This session will explore the convergence of reality capture, AI, and geospatial innovation—uncovering how advanced technologies are redefining the way we model, monitor, and manage assets across the built environment.

Session 1 – 10:30 AM – 11:00 AM

Reality Capture with BIM & GIS: Linking Geo-Located Sites to Intelligent Virtual Building Models

This session bridges the gap between BIM and GIS through lidar-based reality capture workflows. Attendees will learn how geolocated data and Scan-to-BIM techniques create the foundation for digital twins—integrating design, site, and survey data into a unified, spatially aware framework. Presented from an architectural perspective, it introduces “Survey Information Modeling” as the critical step toward building accurate, context-driven digital environments.

Session 2 – 11:00 AM – 11:30 AM

AI Meets Reality Capture: The Future of Utility Asset Management

Explore how AI and large language models are transforming how utilities manage their assets. Through Verdantas’ large-scale substation digitization project, this session demonstrates how 3D scanning, data management, and AI-driven querying unlock new levels of operational intelligence—allowing users to interact with complex datasets intuitively and make faster, smarter decisions in the field.

Session 3 – 11:30 AM – 12:00 PM

Geospatial Gaussian Splats: Toward Autonomous Asset Monitoring

Dive into the next frontier of 3D reality mapping and visualization. This session highlights how Gaussian Splats and georeferenced photogrammetry enable ultra-detailed, scalable, and web-based digital twins for asset monitoring. From autonomous “drone-in-a-box” capture to streaming multi-temporal change detection, attendees will see how these advances are driving the future of automated inspection and analysis.
