Josh Ng is an Assistant VDC Manager at The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company. He works out of the Pleasanton, California office and supports projects across Northern California. He focuses on putting practical reality capture tools in the hands of field teams. He uses mobile and terrestrial laser scanning for existing conditions, as-builts and progress capture. He also coordinates drone flights to deliver aerial scans and progress photos. His goal is fast, accurate site data that superintendents and project teams can use every day. He is an FAA Part 107 certified drone pilot, holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and brings four years of construction and VDC experience.
Josh championed Whiting-Turner’s adoption of an Emlid and Pix4D workflow for documenting underground utilities before trenches are backfilled. He pairs iPhone LiDAR scans with Emlid GNSS receivers, which provide survey-grade positioning that ties every scan to real-world project coordinates. Pix4D then processes the data into georeferenced models in minutes. Field teams use the results for as-built utility verification and QA/QC of utility installation, without slowing down the work. The workflow has been deployed on several projects, with plans to scale it across Whiting-Turner’s offices nationwide.
