Jeff Irwin works for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at the Earth Resources Observation and Science Center (EROS) in Sioux Falls, SD as the EROS Survey and Field Campaign Lead. Additionally, he is the Government lead for Lidar Data Quality research conducted at EROS for the USGS managed 3D Elevation Program (3DEP). Jeff started working at EROS in 2016 after spending several years in the private land surveying sector. He has an A.A.S. in Civil Engineering Technology, a B.S. in Geography, and an M.S. in Geography. His areas of expertise include surveying, terrestrial lidar, airborne lidar, and Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS). Jeff supports the EROS Calibration/Validation Center of Excellence (ECCOE), as well as EROS Topographic Science projects. Jeff provides leadership in planning and coordinating fieldwork, including overseeing the processing and publication of the data collected, for a variety of activities that include assessing airborne topographic and topobathymetric lidar projects and characterization of lidar sensors for 3DEP, validating surface reflectance products for Landsat and other Earth Observing satellites, and assessing the radiometric performance of UAS mounted cameras.
