Grounded in the Future: Teaching Geomatics, 3D Scanning, and Digital Twins to the Next Generation

Feb 17 2026

12:45 PM - 1:15 PM MT

Exhibit Hall Theater

This session explores innovative approaches to engaging the next generation in the geospatial professions through immersive, hands-on education in geomatics, 3D scanning, photogrammetry, and digital twin technology. As the surveying industry evolves rapidly with the adoption of cutting-edge tools, it’s critical that we begin training future professionals early—especially middle and high school students who are just starting to explore career possibilities. Using real-world examples from outreach programs like the Pueblo of Zuni Survey Camp, this presentation showcases how field exercises, cell phone LiDAR systems, drone photogrammetry, and virtual models can captivate students and build foundational skills in mapping, measurement, and spatial thinking. Attendees will learn practical strategies for making technical concepts accessible, as well as how to incorporate industry-grade tools into youth education environments. We’ll discuss the impact of mentorship, partnerships with tribal and rural communities, and the role of industry sponsors in building sustainable outreach. Attendees will leave with a roadmap for developing their own youth programs that blend cultural relevance, technological innovation, and career readiness. This presentation is ideal for surveyors, educators, tribal leaders, and industry professionals who want to inspire and equip the next generation of geospatial leaders while honoring the heritage and future of the land.
