Rail Monitoring and Maintenance with Digital Twins

Feb 12 2025

11:50 AM - 12:30 PM MT

Bluebird Ballroom 2A

Digital twin technology is transforming the rail industry by providing advanced tools for monitoring, maintaining, and optimizing rail infrastructure. This session explores how digital twins, enhanced with data-driven insights and automated analytics, can improve operational safety, streamline maintenance, and drive cost savings in rail networks worldwide.

Realizing the Potential of Reality Digital Twins for Rail Operations

This presentation will examine the role of automated lidar analytics in enhancing rail operations for authorities. By automating inspections and utilizing lidar data, personnel are removed from hazardous environments, promoting safety and efficiency across the rail network. Proactive maintenance strategies based on lidar data enable early detection of track, vegetation, and ballast issues, maximizing asset longevity and reducing costs. Jacobs’ collaboration with Australian rail authorities showcases how network-wide Mobile lidar data, analyzed through this approach, accelerates inspections and smart resource allocation. Following a “capture once, use many times” model, this data provides comprehensive insights for ongoing rail management. Presented by Sam Griffiths, Jacobs.

Digital Twin Solutions for Rail Protection in Urban Construction

This presentation explores the advantages of adopting digital twin solutions for rail protection, focusing on rail systems in the Greater Toronto Area, Canada. Using proof-of-concept (POC) models, we demonstrate how digital twins can provide detailed representations of track movement, and equipment/track health during active heavy civil works nearby. These models offer a safer, more efficient alternative to traditional rail inspections by reducing reliance on human inspectors and eliminating the need for track closures. With contextual data incorporated and real-time feedback of continuous monitoring data collection enabled, we can create a sole source for understanding the project from concept design to tangible real-world development.
