Locating and Mapping Underground Infrastructure

Feb 08 2022

2:00 PM - 3:30 PM MT

Room 207

The existing documentation for underground utilities, infrastructure, cables and piping is difficult to obtain, often out of date, and is rarely updated. As the pace of urbanization continues, these layers of assets underground can cause costly problems if they are not accurately located. This session will focus on technology utilized specifically for locating and mapping underground infrastructure – and best practices for assessing what may become a problem just under the surface.

Integrating Lessons Learned from Boston’s 150-year Legacy with Innovative Technologies in Mapping the Underground
Michael Twohig, DGT Associates
As one of the oldest American cities, Boston holds a rich history that runs not only through the streets but beneath them. Many of the large underground infrastructure projects completed between the late 1890s and early 1920s in Boston are still in use. The insights gleaned from the practices used to create it provide valuable lessons in how to maintain standards of excellence in major development, even as we augment traditional utility surveying practices with new remote sensing technologies. In this session, we will review how best practices from Boston’s underground can be incorporated into cloud-based and mobile mapping platforms to enable the future of underground damage prevention.

Session moderated by Michael Twohig, Director of Subsurface Utility Mapping, DGT Associates Inc.

Session format includes brief presentations followed by a moderated panel discussion and audience Q&A.
