For civil engineering, power, and utilities projects, the facilities involved are large, complex, and safety-critical. Data collected about these facilities, including reality capture and as-built documentation, needs to be accurate, usable and readily accessible. This panel will feature examples of how 3D scanning – in conjunction with the experience and wisdom of our engineering and designers – unlocks new solutions never before thought possible. Join this session to explore how to harness data collected utilizing new tools, (including machine learning and artificial intelligence) to solve problems of the past and bring these sectors into the future.

Through the use of LiDAR collected throughout the construction phase of a project, Intelligent BIM360 design models are updated to As-Built conditions. Through the use of this digital redline approach, attribute information is carried through in a composite digital twin of the project. We will walk through the process from design in BIM360 and document management during construction to survey control and laser scanning processes and the adjustment of design models based on reality capture information.

An accurate and cost-effective method was necessary to measure the holding capacities of tank containment berms on a 190-acre bulk liquids product terminal in North America. Both conventional and unconventional techniques were evaluated to determine the most advantageous method capable of achieving and managing high data quality at efficient cost while mitigating on-site risk during data collection. Leveraging data collection by UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) with the power of BIM (better information management) provided a safer, more rapid, and cost-effective alternative to other methods. This session will discuss • Implement remote sensing with UAV to mitigate risk on site during data collection • Evaluate pre-flight planning to ensure the integrity of the photogrammetry process • Identify photogrammetry data extraction tools within CAD and GIS • Navigate interoperability among various BIM platforms, SiteScan, CAD, and GIS
