Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion: A Call to Awareness, Advocacy, and Action in the Geospatial Domain

Feb 14 2023

11:00 AM - 11:45 AM MT

Exhibit Hall Theater

DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) has received a great deal of attention recently. Despite the topic's prominence in the headlines, there is still some ambiguity surrounding it. Many people regard diversity, equity, and inclusion as morally essential. However, organizations and leaders continue to struggle to go from DEI awareness to action. Previously, DEI was viewed as a means of ensuring government compliance or as a "program" to be maintained by firms. Today, the geospatial industry is moving from awareness to action recognizing that the inclusion of voices from teams with diversity across multiple dimensions drives creativity and innovation. As the importance of DEI develops, many organizations are unclear about where to begin or how to find the necessary resources and time, particularly when juggling a variety of other components required for establishing a sustainable and profitable business. Navigating the DEI space can be daunting and perplexing. DEI, like other goals, requires coordinated efforts, a cohesive plan, and a timeline.

The World Geospatial Industry Council (WGIC) actively supports several initiatives to highlight the value of DEI as a strategic imperative. Continuing its efforts, WGIC intends to engage with diverse stakeholders, including members and partners working on DEI, through this session in order to raise awareness, promote advocacy, and facilitate action. This session will connect attendees with leaders from the public and private geospatial sectors who are willing to share their experiences, case studies, and best practices on themes such as the fundamental definitions of diversity, equity, and inclusion; why strategy is important: focus on outcomes, not activities; setting and outlining goals for developing DEI in your organization; building DEI roadmaps and strategies; DEI Transformation Models and Lessons Learned and moving from awareness to action.

After the presentation, please join us in the Networking Lounge to continue the conversation.
