Feb 08 2022

11:30 AM - 12:30 PM MT

Room 111

Discovering – and preserving – history is a domain of specialized tools. Recently, 3D scanning and lidar have emerged as crucial technologies for capturing archaeological and paleontological finds, as well as discovering them via aerial lidar surveys. In this session, hear about unique case studies that leverage technologies to preserve and explore the historical world.

Lidar and Archaeology: A Review of Two Case Studies and Future Work
Stephen Leisz, Colorado State University
This presentation will overview how airborne lidar has been used in the Lake Patzcuaro Basin of Mexico and the Mosquitia of Honduras to identify and map possible archaeological sites and to guide archaeological fieldwork. After this introduction, the presentation will discuss the next steps and the need to build the capacity of and involve local populations in the preservation of these areas.

Session moderated by Stewart Walker, Managing Editor, LIDAR Magazine.

Session format includes presentations followed by an audience Q&A.
